All About Our Cosmetic Teeth Whitening Treatments

Tooth whitening (or bleaching) is a  non-invasive dental procedure used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile. It boosts your confidence in laughing and smiling in the gathering of the multitude. Because having whiter teeth has now become a priority aesthetic concern of most patients, there are various ways of whitening teeth in the modern days but the most simplified method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth greatly. Because tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is dominant to evaluate the replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc.  Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will go along with the newly bleached teeth.

Tooth whitening is temporal and not permanent.  A touch-up may be needed every several years, and more often if you drink coffee, tea, wine, and smoke.

Reasons for tooth whitening

  • excessive fluoridation during tooth development.
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.
  • Normal wear of the outer tooth layer.

Procedures

We usually recommend two visits for tooth whitening. At the first visit, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic trays. At your second visit, you will check on the trays for proper fit, and rearrangement will be made if necessary.  The trays are worn with a special whitening treatment either twice a day for 30 minutes to 45 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the extent of stains and desired level of whitening. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will reduce shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be admonished to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a healthy, beautiful, white smile.
